mountain climbing

ha ha ha... the most climbing we did was walking up the main streets of leura and katoomba (after walking down them first - the train stations are at the top of the hill). we got the 8.00 train and miss e and i spent the 2 hour trip gossiping and knitting furiously at our scarves. our first stop was leura. we had some brunch at the leura gourmet - hot chocolate and turkish toast with strawberry jam - yum! we wandered down and back up the main street and bought some candles from here - a fabulous candle store. at this shop i bought some 'no worry beads' - an aussie version of worry beads - smooth wooden beads on a leather thong, with a resin bead on the end. very relaxing to hold and play with. miss e bought a little wooden spinning top. (just after getting of the train, we ran into jill, a lady i worked with a couple of years ago. she lives in leura so i was not too surprised. it was lovely to see her and it turns out that she is working just across the road from me. we're going to catch up for lunch soon!)

when we were shopped out in leura, we caught the next train to katoomba - again we wandered up and down the main street but were more restrained in our purchases. we went up to the carrington hotel and had a look around and took some photos. we then had a yummy late lunch at a funky little cafe, looked in a couple of second hand shops, bought some bread and chocolate and then had a cider at the pub near the station. we didn't take the tourist trail as it is all too much to do in one day. we're thinking of going back again before the end of winter and staying for the weekend and checking out the three sisters and all the other things there are to see and do up there.

two very tired girls then got the 4.24 train home. i had a wee nap on the way home and now i'm off to bed.

goodnight!

knit wit

a totally unexciting day at work. 7 dogs sighted. blah blah blah...

tonight i started knitting a scarf - ha ha ha i am the slowest knitter on the planet so i should have it ready for next winter. i will get a chance to to get plenty done tomorrow. i'm off to the mountains for the day with miss e. we keep saying we'll go up there and tomorrow is the day. it is a two hour train trip so the knitting needles should get a good workout. it is a really lovely part of the world and i'm looking forward to getting away from the city. we're going by train but i had to put the little car here anyway...

a rather nice thursday. went over to visit miss e after work. we feasted on pickled onion 'monster munch' and salt & vinegar 'squares' - she's been to 'treats from home' again. after snacking we had home made moussaka for dinner - very yummy and i even ate the eggplant!!

wishy washy

after such an exciting start to the week, today was rather dull. did two hours overtime. not much else to report.

i hope google doesn't trash my blog for posting this!! i laughed.

i think i'll have an early night - i've been going to bed way too late this week and today i look like the haggard old woman that i am :)

just so you don't die of boredom, here's a picture from last night, taken with shell's phone-cam.

Click this thumbnail to see the big picture.

louder, louder...

the first band 'evermore' were ok - miss e, shell and i bought their cd single - it was only $2.

'keane' were better than i was expecting.

'snow patrol' were just as fabulous as i knew they would be. i'm a very happy girl and have their cd on right now even though it is nearly 1.30am.

not a bad tuesday. 10 dogs, lunch with marina and a great night out.

what a weekend...

... and i still have sunday!!!

what have i been up to?

1. going deaf - went to metro on thursday night with miss e and shell. the first band were the same band that were first support for the panics, back in march - i was not terribly impressed then but they have improved quite a lot and have a lot more confidence and decibels. i guess that some airplay on jjj has not done them any harm. the second band were as boring as batshit (miss e described them as 'wanky experimental crap' and i have to agree). franz ferdinand were excellent - it was worth the wait considering that we got the tickets back in may. the metro was totally full of people, some girl chucked her bra up on the stage, a couple of guys were crowd surfing - it was a great night and the band seemed genuinely surprised by the positive response from the audience.

2. going deafer - last night miss e and i went to see eskimo joe at the roxy. the first two bands were pretty good - i enjoyed them enough to consider looking out for their cds. eskimo joe were fabulous - we did not expect any less. it was weird because a lot of the crowd appeared to be very uninspired by the show. how they could remain motionless was too hard to fathom so miss e and i just grooved along and had a great time.

3. shopping - i'm getting a new mobile phone so expect to see more photos on here soon. the only effort this purchase required was for me to lift my current phone to my ear and talk to the lady at my service provider. they call me when my current plan is about to expire and let me know what new phones are available and which ones i can have as long as i sign up for another 2 years. it saves me having to do too much about it so i always sign on again. i've also bought some nice new mulberry scented candles, 'bowling for columbine' on dvd and (wait for it...) some wool - because i've taken up...

4. KNITTING! my mother has finally convinced me to try to knit my own beanie and even a scarf. mum gave me some wool for the hat and i bought some for the scarf. don't hold your breath waiting for the results, but i'm determined to wear one of them before the winter is out!

the soundtrack has been eskimo joe and franz ferdinand, live and in my head

i'll be back when my ears stop ringing...

welcome wednesday

i was too tired to blog last night. i did a bit of a bloglurk but then had to lie down. i tried very hard to stay awake to see 'franz ferdinand' on 'rove live' but was asleep long before they came on. it doesn't matter that i missed them, because i'm going to see them tomorrow night at the metro!

today was an altogether better day. it is still cold but no rain. i managed to get up early but faffed about too much and got to work later than i planned. it worked out well as it saved me having waste time before going out for dinner with harryo and mjr. we had thai at 'sumalee' in the bank hotel at newtown. bloody expensive, but the servings are HUGE! there was an ocean of tom kha pla leftover so i had it put into a takeaway container so it would not got to waste, planning a nice lunch tomorrow... huh... silly susan left it on the seat at the bus stop. i hope some homeless person finds it and enjoys it (it was cold enough at circular quay that i don't think lack of refrigeration will spoil it...)

i might not be posting much in the next few days. miss e and i are off to the metro tomorrow night. i have my rostered day off on friday. my mother is coming to visit and then miss e and i will get the train home with her. we're going to stay overnight at my parent's place on friday, after seeing 'eskimo joe' at the roxy and then i have a 'christmas in july' party at mrs jane's on saturday. despite all that, i'm sure i'll find time to chuck something in here.

monday misery

another cold, wet, windy day. at least my lovely purple coat got another outing.

i cooked some yummy soup tonight - roasted some pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots and garlic and added all that to a pot of cooked red lentils, smashed it all through the blender, then added some ground cumin and a little bit of sesame oil - YUMMO!!!

3. When hanging pictures on your walls, do you like things symmetric or asymmetric? symmetric

10. When learning a new software program, do you find it easier to follow a book or an online tutorial? i'm self taught in most things. i learn just by bashing about until i work it out. just like blogger...

stormy sunday

last night and today the weather got wild & windy and bloody cold. not as cold as what is experienced by some of my blogging friends in canada and the usa but cold all the same. the sun tried in vain to come out but gave up and let the wind take over. it rained intermittently but only when the wind let up - i think the wind made it hard for the rain to make it to the ground.

i was quite content to spend the day blogcruising, blogtweaking and reading 'white ninja comics' but eventually decided it would be a good idea to get off my butt and do the washing and some housework. later on, miss shell called to see if i wanted to go bowling - she has a new ball that needed to be drilled and the guy who does it is only available on sundays. to make life easier, we decided to pre-bowl for tomorrow night so....
let's go bowling!
89, 131, 124 for me. 137, 148, 146 for shell. we'll find out next week how the rest of the team went.

errgh...

i managed to sleep in this morning and ended up staggering out the door at 8.30am - the time i planned to be at work this morning. having not had any dinner last night, i took a detour via wynyard and got a bacon, egg & cheese roll and a nice big coffee. that certainly improved my view of the world. it was bloody cold this morning and in my rush out the door i left my scarf and gloves behind.

tonight i sat down to watch 'once were warriors'. i had to stop it when temuera morrison's character started to bash the crap out of his wife - it made me want to be ill. i have now switched to 'bridget jones' diary'. i will still end up in tears but for different and better reasons than the other film.

an aussie legend

after a thursday spent quietly resting (and blogging), i woke up with my voice restored this morning, which is a good thing as i was determined to be at souths juniors tonight, singing along to richard clapton, playing live. what a guy. is it any wonder he is still playing after 30 years? i'm a very happy girl. i think i have now forgiven him for cancelling the show i was supposed to go to on my birthday. even miss e was impressed - the unimpressable, indie, alternate jjj listener that she is. apart from having to wait 45 minutes to get a drink, it was an awesome show. i kept thinking to myself, "look at all the old ducks grooving along and reliving their youth" and then i realised i'm not much younger... i keep forgetting that i'm 43...

a perfectly fabulous ten dog day.

i can't hear me...

i'm at home today. my voice has disappeared and my ears hurt. my wonder cure did not work...

memory meme found here which i linked to from here while visiting here...

==PRESCHOOL==
the neighbour boy that i used to play with started school before i did, so i used to tag along when his mother walked him to school. i don't know why he started going to school before i did. we were born on the same day/same year yet he started school at the beginning of the year, i started half way through the year.

1966 ==KINDERGARTEN==
there was a girl in my kindergarten class called giovanna. she cried for the first week and screamed if her father so much as look like leaving her side. her dad spent the first week at kindergarten with her.

1967 ==FIRST==
i have vague memories of a teacher with long red hair and a mean face. she used to check our fingernails for cleanliness before letting us into the classroom each day.

1968 ==SECOND==
my teacher's son, who was in kindergarten, used to kiss me on the cheek all the time. i asked her to tell him to stop kissing me and she thought i said 'kicking me' and slapped him. he never spoke to me again.

1969 ==THIRD==
sitting in the library, watching the neil armstrong walk on the moon.

1970 ==FOURTH==
getting a slap across the back of the knees with a ruler for misbehaving. we had been left to sit in the playground while the teacher had to rush off and do something. one of the boys was to report back on any bad behaviour. i don't remember what i did but he dobbed me in. there was a girl named debbie who was showing off the hole in her undies, yet she escaped, unslapped - i wonder why...

1971 ==FIFTH==
the best teacher in the world - bless you mr graham - i think my sick sense of humour was encouraged by this man - he loved to tell us really bad jokes. the whole class adored him. when i had braces fitted on my teeth, he made me stand in front of the class and told them to call me all the awful names they could think of and get it out of their systems. he threatened awful things if he ever heard anybody say anything about them after that day and it worked.

1972 ==SIXTH==
the gorgeous young student teacher. at lunchtime, it was like bees to honey. all the girls would be fluttering about him. we did a production of 'the pirates of penzance' and he was in charge of scenery - surprisingly, every girl who didn't have a part on stage volunteered to work on the scenery (including me)...

1973 ==FIRST FORM==
scary, scary high school: missing friends who went to a different high school, so many new faces, having to change rooms for classes, different teachers for every class.
fun, fun high school: lots of new friends, going on an after school trip to see 2001: a space odyssey with our cool science teacher - a tall nordic blonde from minnesota.

1974 ==SECOND FORM==
i don't remember a lot about this year. i turned 13. i have just looked at my school photo. i look surly and have really long hair...

1975 ==THIRD FORM==
another year of few memories. this year's school photos has me smiling and my hair is shorter. i'm wearing my summer uniform and all the other girls are in winter uniforms...

1976 ==FOURTH FORM==
the year of my first real snog - with a boy i met at a free ac/dc concert at bradfield park under the harbour bridge...

1977 ==FIFTH FORM==
a big year. i turned 16, i left school and started working. lotsa stuff happened in this year. i think it is one of my favourites.

1978 ==TWELFTH==
i didn't get this far...

==SCHOOL AFTER HIGH SCHOOL=
i never went to school again...

==DESCRIBE TWO MEMORABLE BIRTHDAY PARTIES OF YOURS==
see q1 here in my original blog interview and this one.

==DESCRIBE GETTING YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE==
apart from forgetting to put the car into 'drive' to do a hill start immediately after doing a reverse park and getting stuck at an intersection for ages because a bus was blocking my view, i passed. my mother had her test straight after me so our licences are one number apart.

guess who...

...had her grump on last night??? sorry!!!

a much happier 8 dog day susan today despite a scratchy throat and slowly diminishing voice. currently sipping on a nice hot lemon juice, honey and garlic potion (juice of one lemon, a big squirt of honey and one chopped fresh garlic clove. put it in a glass and whack it in the microwave until it bubbles - use a spoon to slowly get it down your neck - the best cure i know for a sore throat.) will do a warm salt water gargle before bed and should be as right as rain come morning (i hope...)

had a chat with mr kim this evening. he is currently up the coast, visiting his family. he was making me jealous by describing the night sky - there are no city lights to drown out the stars up there, so more stars than sky. one of my most favourite visions from this planet.

film critic

one of the joys of subscribing to filmink magazine are the little extras they occasionally offer. this week i received an email inviting me to attend a 'test screening' of a work-in-progress aussie film. despite the fact that most australians do not like their own country's movies, i am an ardent supporter of aussie films. some are crap but mostly our movies are pretty good (and i'm talking the locally made product, not the big budget stuff that is made by hollywood studios and called 'australian' just because it was filmed here.) sadly the one miss e and i went to see today will never be a screen gem (unless they can magically remake it...) i'm not sure i want to name names but it has the number '6000' and the words 'miles' & 'hollywood' in it's title. it was utter crap. admittedly it was a rough cut. we were told to ignore the technical side, they wanted our responses to the characters and storyline. to cut a long story short, i had a wee nap. it was just awful. the acting was possibly the worst i've ever seen, the characters were stereotypes and caricatures, there was too much music, it tried too hard to be a quirky aussie comedy, the storyline was very disjointed with little background as to how the characters came to be in the story. it seemed that everyone at the screening felt the same way. we were given a questionnaire to fill in and then were asked to voice our opinions. at first, nobody said much but once the floodgates opened, everybody put in their two cents worth. if i see this one coming to the local cinema i will eat my words, but until then...

apart from that it was a very nice 18 dog day. it is still raining but that means i got to wear my purple coat which has been hiding in the cupboard for some time.

going postal

a very lazy saturday.

spent most of the morning blogcruising and then went to the post office. it is ages since i've posted anything overseas. they now want identification before they'll even consider allowing you to give them the money for postage... the parcels have more stickers on them than anything else - a credit card sized one for airmail, the green customs one that does not have enough space to write everything they want to know and another large vibrant orange one to let the world know that i passed the id parade... what happens if you turn up without id? do they make you sign an oath promising your firstborn? anyway, just to be a cow, i asked for real stamps, not the wanky computer generated labels they are so fond of using these days. the stamps were very pretty and made the parcels look very nice.

i also had a parcel to pick up at the post office. it was a cd burner from slw, one of my oldest and dearest friends - she is determined to get my computer upgraded into the new millennium - thank you!

tonight i went to miss e's for cider and pizza. we watched 'love actually' on dvd and it had the same effect as when we went to see it at the cinema.

the soundtrack took a detour today:
a song is a city : eskimo joe - twice really loud
hopes and fears : keane
son of evil reindeer : the reindeer section
the final straw : snow patrol - at least 4 times - still obsessed...

do you...

like ice cream? this might change your mind...

the best day of the week!

yeah! it's the weekend!

it is still raining on and off and this morning it was cold enough for breath fog. winter at last.

did 3 hrs overtime tonight, got the bus home with miss shell. leftover fried rice for dinner. not much else to report.

still listening to snow patrol...

Thursday, July 08, 2004

it's raining...

but it is not pouring (but i'm sure that somewhere an old man is snoring...) i doubt it will last long enough to make a difference. it certainly feels like winter now.

not a terribly exciting day. i did an hours overtime. went to the supermarket. i ran into my neighbour, sue, on the way home and ended going with her to get some fried rice for dinner - the real thing is much better than the one i made last week.

still grooving away to snow patrol - gary lightbody is king! it was time for another obsession...

sorry bloggy

oops, another night of neglect for my poor wee bloggy.

i managed to sleep in until 7.45am on tuesday - most days i'm at my desk by then. my old mate, harryo, very kindly shouted for dinner last night. we had chinese at the fortune village in the nsw bowlers club. very, very yummy food and a scrumptious bottle of wine too. when i got home, i was talking to mr kim on the phone til after midnight so poor bloggy did not get a look in.

today was a good day.

pay day for starters! yippee... i lashed out and ordered 2 dvds of 'the young ones' - series 1 & 2 - can't wait for them to arrive.

we had a free lunch to celebrate the official split of the team i work in. we now have two sub teams, one dealing with large employer groups (the one i'm in) and the other dealing with the smaller employers (based upon the number of staff members that they have in the fund.)

i have also somehow managed to become a fire warden - i get to wear the silly hat and was induced to volunteer by the promise of seeing real live firemen... mmm... men in uniform...

i'll be assuming my rock chick persona again this month:
july 16th - richard clapton at souths juniors (at last!!!)
july 22nd - franz ferdinand at metro theatre
july 23rd - eskimo joe (again) at roxy theatre
july 27th - snow patrol & keane at the gaelic club

miss e has given me the snow patrol and keane cds to get prepared. i'm already besotted with snow patrol because the singer is the same guy who sings 'you are my joy' by reindeer section - i'm totally in love with his voice. when i get sick of them, i'll give keane a listen.

mild monday

a 14 dog day. an early start meant an early finish which meant getting the bus home while it was still daylight - yeah! the weather has been quite fabulous. the mildest winter i can remember for a long time. almost half way through winter and it's still between 20°C and 23°C most days with gorgeous blue sunshiny skies. it will drop back to high teens this week but there is still no rain in the forecast. while it is cold overnight and in the morning, it has not yet been cold enough for breath fog.

monday madness!

1. I usually clean my house on days with a 'q' in their name, or about every 6th friday in months with 43 days. (hey, i'd told you before how i feel about housework...)
2. My favorite Sunday night program to watch on television is currently the big brother eviction show (sad, i know).
3. Monday morning I usually waking up thinking, "oh, do i really have to go to work today??"
4. To wind down at the end of a busy day, I like to come home, surf the net for a while, update my blog, talk to online friends and eventually get some sleep.
5. I try not to call anyone on the phone until after 9a.m.
6. And I NEVER call anyone after 9pm, unless i know for sure they will be awake.
7. When I don't have to get up to go to work or school, I sleep in until i wake up.
8. I have 3 telephones in my house.
9. I usually answer the phone on the ring that is ringing when i answer it...
10. When I know I should be sleeping, but am having a hard time falling asleep, I usually toss & turn, turn the radio on, turn the radio off, talk to myself, read, anything but sleep really...

let's go bowling!
no bowling tonight because it is school holiday time. i put the picture up because i like it...

sensible saturday

i couldn't be bothered to post again yesterday. my saturday was spent doing housework and then i coloured my hair with schwarzkopf country colours in a lovely shade of red. it's a demi-permanent colour that washes out in 24 washes. it's shiny red & hides the grey quite nicely...

i was in bed by 9.45pm - what is wrong with me? am i getting old? no i was just bored, there was nowt on the tele, i'd spent more than enough time on the net and i knew that if i watched a dvd i'd fall asleep on the couch.

free drinks

last night, the company i work for put on free drinks to celebrate the end of financial year. by the time i got home it was waaaaaay too late to post and i was a little bit under the affluence of incohol. not terribly drunk, just a bit tired and dull. apart from that, it was just another work day. i've had a nice sleep in today so there are no nasty after effects of my indulgences.

belated 14th birthday wishes to my gorgeous niece lahni for yesterday.

sleepier

i had a wee sleep in this morning. the alarm went off at 6.30am and i decided to listen to the news.... i woke up again at 7.15am - oh well, at least i don't have a strict starting time at work these days. i only try start early so i can leave early.

i got the bus home with miss e tonight. she had an appointment for a hair cut so i hung around the shops while she did that. i had a look in the bricks & mortar version of sanity and found "Everybody's Talkin' - The very best of Harry Nilsson" for $10.99 - with the saturation advertising for this, i just had to buy it. i'm crooning along right now.

please welcome my friend, ric, to the world of blogging. his blog is still under construction but you will soon be able to read of his adventures as he travels around the globe.
